Musée de la Chase et de la Nature,

is in Paris. It’s quite a small museum, you could easily miss it if you didn’t know it was there. But if you do go, you are very lucky. This museum is like a dream about a circus, taking place in 1890, and The Mixed Up Papers of Mrs. of your eccentric great aunt and that book about the kids who live in the Met. for a year.
Housing both real and fictional animals, taxidermied, this museum values imagination over fact, and spins a story about the past- about hunting and guns where the truth is blurred with boast. What do we do know about the past, and how is any museum helping us get to a narrative, rather than THE overarching and objectively provable "truth?" the story is told to us in the form of a building, arranged for our view. When I was there, it was a cold, rainy early Spring day. I was one of the only visitors. I sensed its slightly off-reality would be best expressed through double-exposures on my camera. I love this game, because you have to shoot something, then imagine what that image is, what is its shape, where is the negative space? and choose the next image you shoot based on your memory of that first shot. Its possible to tell little two-frame-stories in this way. I feel that my little constructions- two part views- built on the idea of the past being a maleable story, where we, as viewers are free to choose our own interptretation. In hunting, one is chasing a creature that becomes bigger than life in the minds eye.
